There are many resources available on the Internet about World War One. This pathfinder was created to help you find reliable information about WWI on the Internet. Keep in mind that you can also find excellent information in the books as well.

After you get to the first "search screen," be sure to click on the text on the right hand side that says "Britannica Online 2002." This will take you to the search screen that allows for an integrated search of encyclopedia articles, related web sites and video and media resources. After you type in your search terms, be sure to check the appropriate boxes underneath it to select the resources you would like searched.

American Memory is a gateway to rich primary source materials relating to the history and culture of the United States. The site offers more than 7 million digital items from more than 100 historical collections. Search by Collection or keyword.

From Spartacus Educational, this site explores war in the air, political leaders, weapons and war machines, military tactics, statistics, famous battles, the trench system, the Western front, chlorine and mustard gas, soldiers, shell-shock, trench foot, food in the trenches, body lice and dysentery, soldiers' letters, and more.

In remembrance of the 80th anniversary of the Armistice, the BBC has produced this remarkable Web site on World War One. Overviews are given on four battles -- Gallipoli, Verdun, the Somme, and Passchendaele -- with excerpts from letters and archive audio interviews from veterans recalling the horror and ironies of the “war to end all wars." In addition, there is a ten minute video showing film footage and photographs from the battlefields. Information on the Russian revolution, the war memorials, and the poets who died in the war are also provided. RealPlayer is required to view the multimedia segments.

This is the companion site to PBS program on World War One, it features an interactive timeline and maps and locations.

Primary documents of WWI, most in English, have been assembled by volunteers of the World War I Military History List (WWI-L). Includes conventions, treaties, official papers, documents by year, personal reminiscences, and a biographical dictionary.

Extensive African American military history, from the post Civil War years, the Spanish American War, and the Philippine War to the years preceding World War I, with plans to bring the history up through World War II. Also has sections on military musicians, chaplains, and athletes. A large collection of photographs accompanies this resource.

- Railway Women in Wartime <http://www.hastingspress.co.uk/rail/women.htm>
A pictorial history of British women railway workers during the First and Second World Wars. The black and white photographs offer a fascinating glimpse into the jobs performed by the women working on the railway. The site was compiled by Helena Wojtczak, who is writing a book on the subject and was "the first woman to be employed as a guard by British Rail."

An image database from a period in US history following World War I when '"Reds", "Anarchists", [and] "Outside Foreign-Born Radical Agitators" were persecuted through the Alien and Sedition Act and "mass round-ups and deportations of foreign born citizens" occurred. Browsable chronologically and by subject. Each image includes an explanatory caption. The images were scanned from newspapers and magazines and include photographs, political cartoons, and other illustrations.

Indepth information on World War I aces and aircrafts. Includes biographical information on all the major aces of the war, organized by nationality. This includes rank, squadrons, victories, medals awarded, a photo, and a short account of their war service. In addition, the site has a listing of aircraft used in the war, organized by country of origin. Also provides related links, a discussion forum and an internal search engine.

The complete 1919 Treaty of Versailles. Linked in are other Internet resources connected to the treaty such as maps, photos, and cartoons.
